Using Art to Set Intentions for the New Year
The New Year is a powerful time for reflection and setting intentions. But how do you decide what you truly need or want? Here’s a secret: your subconscious and unconscious minds already know the answers—they just need you to listen.
Subconscious vs. Unconscious: What’s the Difference?
The subconscious mind stores memories, beliefs, and learned behaviors you’re not actively thinking about but can access easily when needed.
The unconscious mind, on the other hand, goes deeper. It contains repressed memories, instincts, and hidden thoughts that remain entirely outside your awareness.
For simplicity, I’ll refer to both as the “subconscious” in this article.
Your subconscious has insights your conscious mind (that darn ego!) often shuts out. It works in images rather than words, which is why art is such a powerful tool for bringing those hidden truths to light.
How to Set Intentions for the New Year with Art
Here are three creative exercises to help you set intentions for the new year by following your subconscious mind’s suggestions to guide you toward what you need, how you want to feel, and the good energy you want to invite into your life. Follow these easy suggestions to set intentions for the New Year and be a more authentic you by this time next year.
1. What Do You Need?
Gather some art supplies (pens, markers, paints—whatever feels right). Without overthinking, create an abstract piece that represents what your subconscious believes you need in the coming year.
Let your intuition guide you as you select colors, shapes, and patterns. If you feel like you need green, add green even when your busy-body conscious mind says “yuck!” Not sparkly enough? Grab confetti or aluminum foil. Don’t ask questions, just get in the flow.
2. Draw the Feelings You Want to Experience
- Think about the emotions you want to feel this year—peace, joy, empowerment, etc.
- Using shapes, textures, or colors, create an artwork that embodies those feelings.
- Display your creation somewhere you’ll see it often as a reminder of the energy you’re cultivating.
3. Create a Symbol for Good Energy
Design a simple symbol that represents only good feelings and experiences for the New Year. You can draw it, sculpt it, or even make it into a charm to carry with you.
Let this symbol be a visual anchor for your positive intentions.
By using art to connect with your subconscious, you can set intentions that align with your truest needs and desires. Creativity lets you bypass the ego, giving you direct access to the deeper wisdom within.
