New Beginnings Without the Costume Change
January loves a costume change. New planner. New word. New declaration written in a pen that will never survive February. The whole month gets dressed like a clean door, as if crossing it means you become easier to live with, easier to understand, easier to sell back to yourself.
I do not trust that kind of beginning.
A real beginning has weight. It does not ask you to erase what came before. It asks what you are still carrying across the threshold, what you keep pretending is luggage when it hurts you, and what part of you has been standing in the hall with its hand on the knob, waiting for you to turn around.
Self-awareness starts there. At the threshold. At the place where you stop performing readiness and begin telling the truth about what has followed you into the new year.
Carl Jung, Self-Awareness, and the Threshold
Jung’s idea of individuation gives us a better map than resolution culture ever will. Individuation is the process of becoming more fully yourself by bringing unconscious material into conscious relationship. It does not hand you a finished self with a ribbon tied around her throat. It gives you contact, pattern, friction, and responsibility.
Your Shadow is part of that work. In general teaching, the shadow holds what the conscious self has rejected, hidden, or failed to recognize. In your life, your Shadow is more specific. She is the Keeper. She holds what you could not carry at the time. She interrupts because something in you still needs to tell the truth.
That does not make her holy. That does not make her harmless. It makes her worth listening to.
This year, skip the list of improved behaviors for a moment. Ask a harder question: what part of me keeps showing up sideways because I refuse to face it directly? Look at your triggers, your repeating patterns, your sudden rage, your shutdowns, your envy, your grief, your strange little fixations. They are not random sparks in the dark. They are marks on the doorframe.
Art gives those marks a body. It lets the hidden thing take shape before your mouth is ready to name it. That is why art belongs in this work. It does not decorate the threshold. It helps you see what is standing there with you.
A Creative Shadow Exercise
- Gather paper, paint, pencils, markers, scraps, thread, glue, or whatever is already within reach. Do not make this precious. You are making evidence, not a masterpiece.
- Create an image of one part of yourself you have been hiding, managing, shrinking, or explaining away. Give it color. Give it posture. Give it a shape that makes sense to your hands before it makes sense to your mind.
- Then look at it without rushing to fix it.
- Ask: What does this part protect? What does it remember? What does it want me to stop denying? Write the answers beside the image. Keep them plain. Don’t hide your truth in a costume.
