The Backstory

I created Leela when I was diagnosed with diabetes and had no idea how take care of myself. The diabetes diagnosis had caused my depression to deepen and anxiety to rise. I was in a fit for sure. This art doll for health and wellness emerged from a need for healing and self-discovery, embodying the struggles and triumphs of a personal journey toward wellness.

I hadn’t taken care of myself in a long time, and I desperately wished for help. Fortunately, I’d recently completed a 3-D art assignment in which I made a You-Do-You Voodoo™ art doll to alleviate my financial worries. “Gwynnie”, short for Gwendolyn, actually worked! Her special gemstones put out the energy I needed to quit worrying. Once that happened, my brain was able to work on solutions to the financial pickle I was in.

So, when I needed some help controlling my diabetes, depression and anxiety, I made another doll. She told me her name was “Leela” and she became a special You-Do-You Voodoo™ art doll for health and wellness. From the start, Leela’s gemstones and jasmine essential oil, known for its calming and mood-lifting properties, began to work their magic on me. This art doll for health and wellness became a vital companion in my pursuit of balance and self-care.

As I created her, I noticed that my stress headaches weakened. I found a sense of peace that naturally pushed anxiety out of my body. I became more motivated to take care of myself. (If you live with depression, you know how difficult it can be to engage in self-care.) Leela, the art doll for health and wellness, empowered me to prioritize my wellbeing and reminded me of the transformative power of self-love.

Why These Gemstones?

You may be wondering why I didn’t include a large rose quartz or some other better-known healing stone for this particular art doll for health and wellness. The reason is that I simply wasn’t feeling it. I wanted a unique combination and found it. Here are some uses for the gemstones:

The Beginning

My skill set of armature building shows here, and it isn’t pretty. Even so, the armature does what it’s supposed to do: house gemstones in a sturdy frame with the strength to support a 2-pound doll. This structural integrity is essential for the art doll for health and wellness to maintain her form and function.

Not a Skinny Kind of Healthy

From the beginning, I felt that Leela had some curves, and the 1/2 tennis balls attached under this batting really did the trick. There’s 1/2 of a tennis ball low on her backside to represent her hiney. If you could see the front, you’d notice the other part of the tennis ball forming her belly. These curves reflect the inclusive nature of the art doll for health and wellness, reminding us that health comes in many shapes and sizes.

Ready for Leela’s Personality to Show

I love it when I get to this part of the doll because they’ve become a blank canvas, ready for hair, clothes and maybe some jewelry or other items they call for. This stage of creating an art doll for health and wellness, or any other You-Do-You Voodoo™ art doll, is where individuality and personal expression come to life.

After receiving their “skin”, the dolls become more vocal about what colors to use and how they want to be dressed. Leela wanted a Victorian gown but modern tennis shoes. Okay.
