“Wisdom in Pieces” (charcoal) is a portrait of an old woman, and the portrait is superimposed onto a jigsaw puzzle that isn’t finished.
Description
This 18 x 24 inch charcoal artwork holds a special place in my heart. It captures the essence of a wonderful elderly woman who I spent my life calling Nana. Her wavy white hair and glasses meticulously detailed to bring out realistic textures. Her eyes, filled with wisdom, and her prominent cheekbones and textured skin give her portrait a lifelike quality that I’m really proud of.
FAQs About “Wisdom in Pieces: An Old Woman Portrait”
How did you come up with the idea for the jigsaw puzzle element in the portrait?
The jigsaw puzzle element was initially inspired by my grandmother’s favorite hobby. After her passing, it took on a deeper meaning for me. I discuss it in the “Backstory” below.
What techniques did you use to achieve the lifelike details in the portrait?
I used charcoal for its versatility and ability to create a range of textures. Detailed attention was given to her wavy hair, glasses, and textured skin, using various shading techniques and a tiny eraser to achieve depth and realism.
How long did it take to complete this portrait?
I think it took two weeks, but I’m not sure. It was very labor intensive though as I tried to get the textures just right.
Artist Notes on This Old Woman Portrait
One
Nana would not balk at being called an old woman. She was old. Almost a century old.
Two
I couldn’t have Nana sit for modeling as I drew, so I took a picture. I also highlighted the lines making up her head in a second image. Here they are:

Three
Have you ever compared the left side of your face to the right side? If our faces were symmetrical, we’d look very different indeed. For some reason, I was surprised that the same is true for the old woman portrait. Compare the two sides of Nana’s face for fun. Just grab the diamond in the middle (it’s hard to see) and slide left and right.
The Backstory
This work is called “Wisdom in Pieces: An Old Woman Portrait”, but before a few minutes ago, the piece was called “Nana” because this is my grandmother. Was my grandmother. She died a bit over a year ago. As you can imagine, this 18 x 24 charcoal artwork holds a special place in my heart. It captures the essence of Nana, a wonderful 96-year-old woman with crazy COVID hair.
Technique
I detailed her wavy white hair and glasses to bring out realistic textures. Her eyes, filled with wisdom (and distance?), and her prominent cheekbones and textured skin give her portrait a lifelike quality that I’m really surprised I created. But what makes this piece different is the transformation to a jigsaw puzzle at the bottom of the portrait. Originally, the jigsaw puzzle element in the portrait was meant to honor my grandmother’s favorite hobby. Since her death, however, its meaning has evolved in many ways.
The Jigsaw Puzzle
If the puzzle represents Nana’s life, it appears almost complete, with just a few pieces left to put into place—symbolizing the final steps to take before she strode into the hereafter. Or maybe the unplaced pieces are Nana’s memories that she didn’t want or couldn’t access. Many of her memories are certainly lost to us, the daughter and granddaughters left behind. There are no more stories. We know what we know, and that is all. What we choose to remember will make up who Nana was.
I hope the way her rendering blends into the puzzle pattern makes you want to explore the deeper symbolism as it appears to you. I hope you discover your meaning in this old woman portrait, and that all sits right in your heart.

Mastery of Memory: A Poignant Tribute in “Wisdom in Pieces: An Old Woman Portrait”
“Wisdom in Pieces: An Old Woman Portrait” is a deeply evocative and technically impressive charcoal artwork that captures both the essence of a beloved grandmother and the profound symbolism of memory and legacy. The artist’s detailed rendering of the subject’s wavy white hair and glasses immediately draws the viewer’s attention, showcasing a mastery of texture and realism. The lifelike quality of her eyes, filled with both wisdom and a hint of distance, conveys a depth of character that speaks to the 96 years she lived. Her prominent cheekbones and the fine lines of her textured skin further enhance the realism, making this portrait a striking tribute.
The most compelling aspect of this piece is the integration of the jigsaw puzzle motif. Originally intended to honor the grandmother’s favorite hobby, the puzzle now serves as a poignant metaphor for her life and the memories she left behind. The nearly complete puzzle, with a few pieces missing, suggests a life well-lived but not fully decipherable to those she left behind. This visual metaphor is both touching and thought-provoking, inviting viewers to reflect on their interpretations and connections to the piece.
The transition from the lifelike portrait to the abstract puzzle pieces is executed with subtlety and skill. This transformation is not only a technical achievement but also enhances the emotional impact of the artwork. It signifies the gradual fading of memories and the inevitable incompleteness of our understanding of a loved one’s life after they pass away. The blending of the rendering into the puzzle pattern encourages viewers to contemplate the nature of memory and legacy, making the artwork resonate on a personal level.
However, one potential drawback of this piece could be its heavy reliance on personal symbolism, which might not be immediately accessible to all viewers. While the narrative provided by the artist adds a rich layer of meaning, those without context might find the puzzle motif less impactful. Additionally, the stark contrast between the highly detailed portrait and the abstract puzzle elements could be jarring for some, potentially detracting from the overall cohesiveness of the composition.
Overall, “Wisdom in Pieces” is a beautifully crafted and emotionally powerful old woman portrait that combines technical prowess with deep personal meaning. The artist has succeeded in creating a piece that not only honors their grandmother but also invites viewers to engage with its symbolism and reflect on the nature of memory and loss. The work stands as a testament to the enduring impact of loved ones and the fragmented yet cherished memories they leave behind.
