My grandmother grew curious about SoulStitch™ dolls right around the time Hannah was underway, and she would come examine each one and ask what was hidden inside. Hannah’s hidden details, the layers you never see once she’s finished, came directly from that curiosity. Nana was partial to Hannah. She said so more than once. ### “Hannah the Kitchen Witch” from Beginning to End #### The Creation Sheet Every doll I make, except my very first ones, comes with a Creation Sheet that starts as a sketch of her body. As she takes shape, I write down what surfaces: thoughts, impressions, whatever the making stirs loose. Not all of it is mine to keep. Some of it belongs to whoever brings her home next. I have learned through tarot that more than one person can occupy the same space and take something different from it. I expect the same is true here. #### Rocks as Soup The McDermitt sunset brecciated jasper reminds me of a chicken and vegetable soup, tomato broth and all. The opal and agate running through it are the seasoning, mostly salt. The black hematite, with its specularite sparkle, is the pepper. I may have overdone it with the pepper. Past the kitchen comparison, these stones do real work in a doll built to guard a hearth. Brecciated jasper carries grounding, steadiness, and courage, and it is known specifically for helping someone regain focus once everything gets to be too much. That is the whole job description for a kitchen witch. Opal moves through her in flashes: the stone of intuition, of trusting your hands when the recipe runs out of instructions. It is the stone for the moment you stop measuring and start tasting. Black hematite grounds her lowest layers. Heavy, metallic, and unbothered, it sharpens decisions and shields against whatever chaos walked in the door with everyone’s shoes still on. Keep her away from water. It is whoever keeps it standing. #### Muscle and Skin with a Sassy Pose Hannah is rather bossy. She likes things her way and isn’t afraid to use her stirring stick to adjust a seasoning or two. At this point, you can see her raised knee and arms that look like they should be doing something. Eventually, Hannah holds a grimoire (or recipe book, depending on who you’re talking to) and a stick to stir the soup (or wand, again depending on who you’re talking to). #### My Eyes! My Eyes! At this stage of Hannah’s build, I decided she should have some eyes. The yellow-headed pins mark the spot. Eyes are an unusual feature for a SoulStitch™ doll. I typically keep their faces clear so their caretaker can reflect their own ideas onto the doll. I’ve made several art dolls since, and no one else has eyes. Hannah’s clothes are almost done, but I filled out her skirt and added some jewelry. And then there was the oven mitt and the grimoire with herbal codes and the awesome little wand. And her hair. Specularite is a sparkling, metallic form of black hematite, and hematite is what I reach for anytime a piece needs to stay grounded under pressure. Hannah is what you give her permission to be. ## Artist Statement Hannah comes from the place where folklore, domestic work, and my own practice overlap. I have always been fascinated with the kitchen as the actual heart of a home, and this piece grew out of that, along with an interest in the shadow side of domestic work: the part that never gets thanked. When I am building, I find a place with no clock in it. Making Hannah gave me that same place, somewhere the noise of depression and PTSD went quiet for a while. Her body, built from sunset brecciated jasper and black hematite, carries the grounding I was looking for in my own hands while I worked. Hannah is whimsical on purpose, but she is not a stereotype. She is an empowering presence for the kitchen, meant to guide whoever keeps her toward more intention in the ordinary work of feeding people. Her grimoire stands for what gets passed down between generations. Her wand is a tool, in the kitchen and outside it, for the kind of change that starts small and specific. I built her to close the distance between an old folk figure and the kitchen someone is standing in right now. I want her to give whoever keeps her something to return to during the ordinary rituals of cooking, and a body for the protective instinct underneath all of it. Hannah stands for the comfort of home and hearth, and for what it takes to look at your own Shadow instead of away from it. Building her works the way my art usually works. It functions as therapeutic art. Something unresolved gets a shape of its own and somewhere to go. Hannah holds the Shadow and the light at once.
